Gestural Interfaces
Mary’s work spans audio-visual compositions, interactive installations, and performances at festivals and galleries throughout Europe, the UK and Australia. In her PhD thesis at CCS, Mary explored how gestural interfaces can broaden musicians’ scope for physical expression, creating more engaging and dynamic performances with digital technology.
Intangible Spaces is a performance piece composed for voice and custom-designed gestural instrument, the etherstring. Sounds are plucked from the ether using touchless gesture control, merging with the voice to create a hybrid sonic signature. Visuals depicting the sonic processes behind the instrument are projected onto the body, creating a shifting canvas of movement and sound-controlled light beams. It premiered at Vivid Sydney in 2018
Another gestural work, #Me Two, was inspired by the events that unfolded around the Harvey Weinstein scandal. It explores themes of power, influence, physical gesture and empowerment and was performed live in collaboration with Donna Hewitt at Soma Sonic, Bondi Feast Festival 2018.
