Norman (images 1 & 2)
I wanted to make an installation that had a temporary live presence, and to create a space that, at first glance alluded to the supposedly cool universal values of aesthetic architectural judgment, but a space that did not immediately reveal its function when devoid of my presence. The piece references Le Corbusier‘s "Modular Man" which was devised in 1947. Modular man presents the human body as singular and universal as type. In attempting to subvert this architectural standardization of the body, "Norman" was a space in which I determined the boundaries of what is defined as the norm. Projected onto the back wall of the space was an animated image created by using a system normally used for medical and sports research. I wanted to explore how this technology traced the moving body by attaching sensors to myself and travelling on the floor without my wheel-chair. The CODA system is ‘normally’ used to find out how the fine detail of someone‘s language of movement has changed through injury. It is also used to improve athletes‘ abilities by refining technique and ironing out inconsistency by standardizing and categorizing physical language. |
