PhD Opportunities

[1] Practice-based research in the electronic arts The research programme is available for practising artists and musicians who wish to explore their practice and its inter-relation with new technological developments. The research will be part of a continuation of an international study reported, for example, in [1].

[2] Studies of creative practice in the digital arts and conceptual design
The research programme is available for graduates in any discipline who wish to study creativity by observation, interview and action research. They would study creative practice and its inter-relation with new technological developments. The research case will be part of a continuation of an international study reported, for example, in [1].

[3] Computer support systems for creativity
The research programme is available for graduates of computer science, IT and related disciplines. They would study support for creative practice and new technological developments in digital media. This can include HCI, virtual reality, the WWW, gestural interation and end-user graphical programming methods. The research case will be part of a continuation of an international study reported, for example, in [1].

[4] User Intention and multimedia system design
The research programme is available for graduates of computer science, IT and related disciplines. It will investigate the generation of source computer programs directly from users' intentions. The creative professional user has intentions and firm ideas in their mind, but they are often not clearly articulated. The need is to provide mechanisms that allow the user's intentions to be transformed into programs that correctly express their ideas. This work can be seen in the context of interactive art systems [3].

[5] Human-computer interaction through gesture
This programme is available to graduates of any discipline who are interested in looking at the significance of the expression of intention through gesture and body movement. As the philosopher Anscome puts it, the expression of intention can be seen as linguistic 'if we will allow certain bodily movements with a conventional meaning to be included in language' [2 p5]. In this research language extensions, incorporating movement, will be investigated using the group's Interactive Environment.
