Kumiyo Nakakoji is interested in human-computer interaction design for creative knowledge work, specifically focusing on Knowledge Interaction Design, a framework for the design of representations and interactions for computational systems serving for early stages of design.

Her previous work includes a knowledge-based approach for supporting design tasks and computational media for cross-cultural communication supporting collective creativity. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Colorado in 1993. Her work experience includes Senior Researcher at SRA Inc., and Adjoint Associate Professor at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan. She has served as organizers and program committee members for a number of technical conferences and academic communities.

She is currently Professor at Research Center for Advance Science and Technology (RCAST), University of Tokyo, Japan, and directs the Knowledge Interaction Design (KID) Laboratory.
